IBS Symptoms

Hi,

I am getting really fed up of not being able to eat the meals i enjoy, without feeling very bloated afterwards or having cramps or wind straight after a meal. Or in the mornings i wake up with terrible pain.
I have cut down on the caffeine intake to 1 or 2 drinks either one coffee or 2 cups of tea. I struggle to enjoy other meals that have tomato in it like Spaghetti Bolonaise or Chilli Con Carne as i tent to feel quite ill after eating these. The same if i eat baked beans or kidney beans. I have tried taking charcoal tablets after a meal to help with the discomfort or issues, I was wondering if there are other natural remedies that are available that wont cost much as money is tight at the moment. I try to get out and i like going for walks which seems to help, or lying on my side after a meal tends to help is there anything else that could be suggested, as i cant carry on as I am.

Re: IBS Symptoms

Hi Amzcard6

You are having caffeine intake really within what we would advise so that aspect is fine. Your meals that contain tomato such as spaghetti bolognese contains a number of triggers - wheat pasta, onion, garlic - it also can be a meal relatively high in fat, chilli contains again onion, garlic and the meat can be high in fat. The beans contain galactooligosaccharides and this can also be a trigger. As you can see it can be complex.

If you have tried some of the simple things to cut out you could try a low FODMAP diet - this could be done with respect to following it within a limited food budget but you should ask your GP for a referral to a dietitian who can really be helpful to assist you to do the diet at a much lower cost. You should be able to see a dietitian within the NHS if you are UK based.

What you could try initially to reduce the symptoms from these meals is to use tinned rinsed pulses/beans (this will remove some of the galactooligosaccharides) and try and reduce the onion and garlic you add to the meal and dry fry your meat then drain off some of the fat. Smaller portions can also be helpful - perhaps add a green salad along with the meal for more interest.
