I get recurrent coughs and chest infections and when I cough it used to hurt in my stomach which I can handle but this year and last year I have had pains in my back due to the coughing. This year was really bad as I could not get out of bed very well and had muscle spasms for one week. A doctor has given me painkillers but this is taking time to heal. I need to know why my back is hurting when I cough as I do not know anybody who has had this trouble. I can handle the cough but not the back pain :(

You do need to go back and see our doctor if you are still experiencing problems. Alternatively you may want to consider making an appointment with a chiropractor who can take a closer look. Take a look at the General Chiropractic Council website - https://www.gcc-uk.org/- as they have list of registered chiropractors and you will be able to locate one in your area.

If your back muscles are tender to touch, then your pain is probably caused by back muscle overuse due to repeated coughing.

If your back muscles are not tender to touch and you feel pain only during coughing or deep breathing, then you could have pleurisy.

You mentioned muscle spasms, so the pain is probably from muscles. If you feel could be something more you can check for other causes of back pain (kidney disease, herniated disc, arthritis...):
