As an option, he could try to improve his sleep quality through acquiring a new mattress or toppper for back pain. My husband faced a similar issue, but when we upgraded our bed, his slumber gets better and a light release of his neck and back pain was noticed.

Re: Suffering in back pain
I suffer from back pain regularly. The thing only I can do that makes me feel better is massage. Research also shows that massage therapy is beneficial for those who are suffering from back pain. It helps to increase the blood flow and circulation, which helps to bring needed nutrition to tissues and muscles. Also decrease tension in the muscles, can improve flexibility and reduce pain.

Home treatments
Over-the-counter (OTC) pain relief medication, usually nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), such as ibuprofen, can relieve discomfort. Applying a hot compress or an ice pack to the painful area may also reduce pain.
Resting from strenuous activity can help, but moving around will ease stiffness, reduce pain, and prevent muscles from weakening.

I think your brother needs to take some Acupuncture services from a trusted and registered Acupuncture specialist doctor. Acupuncture can help your brother to get rid of the back pain.

Hi Selenahudson / eblclinic
Thank you both for your posts. Although acupuncture is one form of pain relief, please be open to all variations of pain management, we have a pain forum which you may find useful, https://www.talkhealthpartnership.com/f ... .php?f=115. We would also suggest that your brother revisits his GP for further information and advice.
Please let us know how things progress.
Kind regards

Re: Suffering in back pain
As for the shoulder/neck pain, if it were a trapped nerve, the most obvious symptom is the shoulder/neck feeling numb and constant pins and needles.
Still, when I started couriering again after a break, I was sure I had all the symptoms for it, to the extent that my upper limbs were constantly numb and I'd wake up repeatedly at night with intense pain and wasn't able to move them for a few minutes after. A new mattress and pillow completely solved the problem! The logic is that the strain of riding the bike being taken on the upper body, coupled with a bad sleeping position, was making the muscles so stiff and 'pumped' that blood flow was being restricted and didn't have a chance to resume to normality at night when the body should relax.

Re: Suffering in back pain
There are many causes of back pain, as you said that your brother is a software engineer and he has to sit on the chair for a long time. This is may be the cause of pain. In the beginning, this can be cured by proper exercising and a healthy diet. If this increases you can consult with a massage therapist and chiropractor and you can get your treatment.

Re: Suffering in back pain
Low back pain is one of the most common symptoms that plague millions of patients, and I recommend that you schedule an appointment with your primary care physician. Low back pain that comes on suddenly without any preceding injury is usually due to some type of muscle spasm. These muscle spasms can be due to many different causes but underlying arthritis or degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine is sometimes the underlying cause.
