chronic backache after surgery

Postby hairyfairy on Sat Jan 19, 2013 1:42 am

Iv`e suffered from low back pain sice the age of 31, & Iv`e seen a physiotherapist who told me that this could be due to weakened body core muscles after a hysterectomy the year before the pain began. I was given some exercises to do, & they helped a little, but not much. The pain is always made worse by walking long distances, & sometimes I can feel a grating & clicking sensation where the pain is. Iv`e had this problem for 29 years now, & I`m scared that as I get older it will get worse, & I`ll end up disabled by it, & unable to walk. Is there any way that I can be rid of the pain for good without surgery? :(

I know how you feel. I had surgery on L4/5 disc 12 years ago, this was completely successful but a few months later I slipped and fell at work, this caused the nerves around the surgery area to become overstretched and ....i ended up with permanent nerve damage in all of my left leg.
Now....12 years on the surgery has caused a weakness in the same area and possibly some degeneration, waiting on MRI before i go back to see the surgeon.
Although I have been told this will NOT cause me to become paralysed the gradual effect of this problem means ....after years of doing what i can to help myself re exercise and keeping working use pacing....I am off work, have been told i am no longer fit to do my job but might be able to do a desk job....which i have no qualifications for.....have put my house on the market, am paying people to clean my house, do ironing etc.....scared so very scared of what the future holds for me, i have ALWAYS found a positive way forward but i'm 51 and quite honestly i am scared because i have no idea how i am going to get through this.....surgery is probably about to be offered!!!! it worked last time but....who knows.

Whatever may be the case, it is always better to take a second opinion.

Yeah, get a second opinion. Or have you been to chiropractor?

You need to check and diagnose with CT scan where actually damaged has been occur. You can use muscle relaxant and pain killer for 3 to 6 month along with exercise given by physiotherapist.

Several back-pain patients stop exercising fear of aggravating their pain. But avoiding exercise is one of the worst things you can do for your back, most back pain experts have begun encouraging exercise.Exercise also helps prevent back pain.

Stretching the nerve root while the body is healing (scarring in) after back surgery can help limit epidural fibrosis from becoming a clinical problem. Most scar tissue forms within the first 6 to 12 weeks after back surgery. The theory is that if the nerve is kept mobile while the wound heals, the nerve will not be bound down by adhesions and the scar tissue that develops should not become a problem. For example, routinely pumping the ankle while stretching the hamstrings, the large muscle running down the back of each thigh, will move the nerve across the operative disc site in the low back and help prevent it from scarring down.
