Recurrences of Lichen Sclerosus

I was diagnosed with LS about four years ago and after the first course of treatment it seemed to clear up. Sadly within twelve months it was back with a vengeance and despite several courses of treatment I can’t seem to get rid of it. Is it a life long condition once you get it with periods of remission or can it actually be cured for good?

Re: Recurrences of Lichen Sclerosus

That is good to hear that your LS improved well with treatment four years ago. LS is a condition that tends to be long-term, and it can wax and wane. The body’s immune system causes inflammation of the skin, making it itchy or sore, but also slightly damages the skin so that it can look or feel different.
Initial treatment after diagnosis (usually a topical steroid cream or ointment) will usually bring the inflammation under control, but it does not turn off the process that is driving the inflammation, and so does not prevent it from flaring or grumbling on. Usually some milder strength topical steroid longer term will help to keep control and to prevent troublesome flares.
The inflammation can cause some thinning of the skin, which is then slightly more fragile than before. Long-term care to keep any skin irritation or friction to a minimum, will help to keep the skin healthy.
