I have a complex bladder problem, I have urine retention , meaning that I can get a volume of 600ml when I self catheterise. I also have a leakage problem, and following ambulatory urodynamics, it has been suggested I have Botox injections and a suprapubic catheter. I am wondering if there is a possibility of any other treatment.

Hi Sandra
Thanks for your post.
It does sound quite complex your bladder condition. Do you find self catheterisation a problem or are you quite comfortable with doing it? If you are ok with it then I would advise you to avoid a supra pubic catheter. They have their place, but if you can maintain a good routine self catheterising (even after Botox to the bladder) this is the optimum way to manage. It’s difficult to comment when you’ve clearly been seen by a specialist and I’d be keen not to give you advice based on what you’ve told me versus a specialist who actually knows you. But my feeling is avoid the catheter if you can manage with Self catheterisation. The Botox will help with the leakage, I’m assuming you’ve been told you have an overactive bladder as well as one that doesn’t empty properly.
Do you have a specialist nurse to chat to about the pros and cons of your proposed bladder management?
I wish you well.
