How do I cope with being bald?

Hello,
I'm looking for some advice and don't know where to turn. I lost all my hair earlier this year and have been diagnosed with alopceia universalis. I'm currently under a dermatologist and have got a wig and they're trying me with the DPCP treatment.
I'm just struggling emotionally and feel like my friends and family don't understand and are fed up of hearing about it.
Do you have any advice on how I can come to terms with suddenly being bald? I'm finding it very tough.
Thank you.
Linda.

Hi Linda,

Thank you for your post. I am sorry to hear of your experience and I can completely empathise with how you must be feeling. It is a dramatic change in appearance over a short space of time and it must be very difficult for you.

There are a number of support options available for patients with hair loss. Firstly I would advise you get in touch with the charity Alopecia UK. Most of their members have alopecia areata but it is a charity that is open to anyone with any type of hair loss. They run regular patient support activities which is a great opportunity to meet others going through the same experience and also get up to date information about latest research etc. Kerry Montgomery has recently joined Alopecia UK as their patient welfare support manager who is also a psychology wellbeing practitioner and I am sure they will be able to provide you with a lot of support. In fact Alopecia UK have a “Big Weekend event” coming up in September which may be of interest to you.

Secondly there are other platforms such as apps which help you to connect with people in your local area who are also undergoing hair loss. Ally is one such app.

Finally I am hosting a hair loss awareness event called Get Ahead of Hair Loss which is in September in London where psychologists, dermatologists, wig makers, hairdressers and many other hair professionals all come together to support patients in a one day programme all about hair loss.

I hope you manage to find something suitable to support you through this difficult time. Best of luck and I wish you all the best.

Sharon
