My partner bought one of those blood pressure kits and I tested mine at the weekend and it’s pretty high for my age (32) I’m a bit scared to go to my doctor and want to try and reduce it by myself first, have you got any tips? Sarah

Hi Sarah

Thank you for your question. If you feel your blood pressure is high, it would probably be worth going to see your GP and ask his / her advice as it could be the side effect of something else.

In the meantime, to look after your general health, ensure you eat a healthy balanced diet, with lots of whole foods, whole vegetables and whole grains and reduce your intake of processed food, alcohol and sugar. Include some exercise every day to raise your heart rate, even if for just 15 minutes and walking around the block. Sleep is also really important for your general health - you should aim for 7-8 hours of good quality sleep every day. And finally take time to relax and de-stress - particularly in the case of high blood pressure as a result of stress. Just sitting still and being quiet every day for 5 minutes can help lower your stress levels; listen to some nice calming music, take a bath or you could try some mindfulness or meditation - there are a lot of good apps you can try such as calm, headspace or insight timer if you are new to this.

If you have any further questions, please get back in touch.
Best wishes
