Re: psoriasis on scalp

Thank you for your question. Scalp psoriasis can be very distressing due to itching and flakiness which can have a knock-on effect on what clothes patients choose to wear. It is important that patients seek advice from their GP and then if necessary, a dermatologist on the best approach to managing scalp psoriasis as treatment should be tailored to the individual's needs. Some patients can keep itching and scaling under control with shampoos containing tar, or a shampoo containing a combination of tar/salicylic acid/coconut oil which helps to break down the scale and calm redness. For more stubborn areas, descaling ointments can be used which contain salicylic acid and coconut oil, these can be applied for several hours or overnight and washed out in the morning. It is important to remove thicker scales using this method to allow other scalp therapies to work more effectively. Prescription only treatments are also available and these include topical steroid lotions, gels and foams, some of these also contain vitamin D.
