Knobbly finger joints
Is there anything at all that can be done for the osteoarthritic fingers I have on both hands with knobbly finger joints? It is getting more and more difficult to make a fist as they restrict movement and sometimes I can't hold things like cutlery properly. I am very active (even do boxing!!) . They sometimes ache - usually when it is wet and sometimes my hands are even painful but not often enough to really bother me. I am 70 but have had this for years - they are just getting worse. My mother had the same.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Knobbly finger joints
Progressive joint damage is not inevitable although hand osteoarthritis does tend to run in families. You are already doing the right things by continuing to exercise, as execise can't damage the joints, but pain as you say,may come and go. Try stretching your joints or exercising with a ball that you can squeeze and try not to worry about the future. There is nothing that you can do to prevent what might happen, but stay positive and keep exercising to minimise your pain and stiffness.

Whilst it may not be possible to reverse the knobbly fingers, there are lots of things that could help you maintain a normal lifestyle. You can find some useful hand exercises that will help you to maintain your grip strength at https://www.arthritisaction.org.uk/livi ... exercises/
There are also grip aids that you can use to help with difficult tasks such as opening jars and cans https://www.arthritisaction.org.uk/wp-c ... hritis.pdf
If you want more advice regarding your options speak to an osteopath. You can find one at https://members.iosteopathy.org/find-an-osteopath

It's also worth chatting to your GP to find out whether there is a Hands Therapy unit local to you. The hands therapists, often occupational therapists specialising in hands, will be able to show you exercises, help you find suitable assistive devices and also advise on pain relief/supportive therapies (such as special gloves to help with pain).
Re: Knobbly finger joints
Thanks I have not heard of this before but will inquire.
