Crohn’s related joint pains

Dear Dr Bawa,

Hope you are well.

Just wondering if you can help and clarify joint pains related to Crohn’s disease. Considering Crohn’s a very difficult and debilitating diagnosis. I believe that the gut inflammation has direct relation and does impact all the joints as well.
I suffer with Crohn’s from last 15 years and on biological meds at the moment. I often have severe joint pains that impacts daily activities and mobility as well. My Rheumologist has done MRI to look for AS. She believes that I have clinical signs. But have not been able to get evidence from MRI. Therefore, no management plan has been put together at all for even temporary relief until Crohn’s get in control.
As it is extremely hard to stay in pain everyday, could you please suggest me something that would help in time being? I know I do not have many pain killer options due to gut issues. But think that there must be some kind of drug options suitable in my situation.

Many thanks in advance and I look forward to hear from you.

Kind regards,
Gagandeep

Hi,

you are correct, Crohns can be related to joint arthritis.

You say you are on biologic therapy - is it Amgevita?
This drug will help Crohns and your joints.

If it is not working you may need a change of biologic

Re: Crohn’s related joint pains

Dear Dr BAWA,
Many thanks for your response.

I am on drug called Vedolizumab, which is gut specific and does not help with joint pains. And painkillers are not real options due to gut issues. So I am very much limited in terms of pain management. So, I am just looking for other ways to manage joint problems and get some relief.

Are you able to suggest something based on your expertise please?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Gagandeep

Hi,

if you have inflammation of your joints , then Amgevita can help both the gut and the joints.

Are you under the care of a Rheumatologist? Does you GP feel your joints are swollen?
