kidney stents

kidney stents
I have a urinary stoma following a cystectomy in 2010. Because of kidney problems I had stents fitted to the kidneys/stoma earlier this year. How often should these be changed? I have a dull ache sometimes in one side or the other and a lot more mucus in the stoma bag. Can the stents ever be completely removed?

Re: kidney stents
Hi
I presume the stents were put in because there is a narrowing (stricture) of the ureter or some delay or blockage in the drainage of the kidneys.
Depending on the reason why there were put in, whether they get blocked with mucous or encrustations, the frequency of changes can vary from 3-12 months.
As for complete removal of one or both side stents, this depends on the underlying reason why there were put in the first place. If they were put in for the stricture of the anastomosis or ureters, then unless the primary problem is sorted, removal can lead to blockage (of kidney drainage) again.
