Lichen planus

In November I had an abscess under a tooth and was prescribed amoxicillin by my dentist. Shortly afterwards I developed a very sensitive mouth and tongue. I lost all the skin off my tongue and developed mouth ulcers and cold sores. I could not bear hot food or toothpaste at all. In January two weeks ago I was finally diagnosed Lichen Planus after a misdiagnosis of oral thrush by my gp. I still cannot bear toothpaste apart from children’s flavoured ones. I can now eat luke warm food and drink. I have just almost finished a two week course of oral steroids. The idea is that I suddenly reacted to the amoxicillin. I have had this drug before though with no problems.

Re: Lichen planus

Thank you for your post,
Your symptoms sound really troublesome, Lichen Planus can take several months to recover. I would advise you see your GP again for advice and possible onwards referral to an oral medicine specialist or drug allergy specialist if appropriate.
Certain medications can trigger Lichen Planus. Amoxicillin can potentially trigger significant delayed allergic reactions that could present similarly.
