IBS and pernicious anaemia

I suffered with 'IBS for 27 years. I was finally diagnosed with pernicious anaemia, in July 2019 and started on B12 injections. All of a sudden, my 'IBS' went away. Constant chronic diarrhoea is a classic symptom of Pernicious anaemia. Why don't 'IBS' patients get this simple blood test especially when the IBS is very badly not under control. I had a disciplinary at work because of this and eventually lost my job, and it could have been a very different story with a simple blood test. Thank you.

Re: IBS and pernicious anaemia

Hi there,
I cant comment on your individual clinical history. Blood tests are important along with other investigations to look for causes of chronic diarrhoea. This should include measuring B12 levels, and if found to be low - investigating appropriately. Sorry to hear you have been going through a tough time, but glad to hear your have found a treatment that has improved your symptoms.

Kind Regards,
