Neuogenic Bowel

Hi there I have been told that I have a Neuogenic Bladder & that the next thing to expect is the Bowel to follow which is already happening. I'm always having bowel Incontinence issues & without knowing that I'm leaking motion :o I am wearing a diaper 24/7 now  & I'm 54 Years Old. What I was wondering if there was anything that could be checked or done to help with my problem ? I was told about a system that can put water up in the bowel to keep things clear but not sure what or where I can get answers.

Looking forward to any solution.

Re: Neuogenic Bowel

Hi There Shane - yes there is such a thing - an anal or rectal irrigation system- but this is relatively high up on the ladder of treatment for constipation, other non-medical treatments as well including biofeedback which is normally run through a specialist nurse-led clinic may be useful too. It sounds like you may need some help to talk through your different treatment options - perhaps to see your GP or practice nurse in the first instance. You should have access to a specialist in secondary care who will have an interest in this area, perhaps with some initial investigations and simple treatments first. You need to be on the right diet with adequate amounts of fibre to help bulk up/form the stool and stimulate your colonic motility. Laxatives can sometimes be used - but you have to get the balance right! Sometimes investigations can be helpful which can assess the transit through your gut as well as the motility/muscle strength of the lower part of your bowel. This will depend on what is available to you locally and different people will have different strategies to try and treat your symptoms.

Kind Regards,
