There has been much in the press recently about the apparent increase in adult acne. Are you an adult who suffers with acne, oily skin or a regular breakout of spots? Did you suffer with acne or spots as a teenager or is this the first time you've had problems? Do you find that stress affects your skin? Tell us what has helped or hindered you.

hello

im a 25 year old man and have quite bad acne, i was clear all through my teens and only started getting acne at about the age of 21. to say it has destroyed my life is an understatement ive have lost most of my friend due to not wanting to goto the pub or out during the day, most of the time i just want to hide in my room and i do. some weeks i dont think its to bad and go out buts thats only about once every 2 months. i do goto work but have had some time off due to not being able to face going in. i do have a girlfriend and have been with her for the past 5 years and she is great, though i dread it if she makes plans for us to do sometime because i know my acne will be bad on that day! same goes for any event, take this weekend for instants i had tickets for the snooker but didn't go because of my skin  family events are the worst because they always take pictures. i started taking pictures of my face everyday last year to see i could find out whats causing this for me, but i eat and drink pretty much the same on a good week to the bad. all acne treatments from over the counter are a waste of money they dont work! infacted they seem to make it worse so ive stopped using them (although i've just started using the new oxy for men, but i think i will stop, as yet again they are getting worse)i have been on all sorts of medication from the doctor but only one was sort of successful (minocycline mr) but after about a year and half on them (with regular blood tests) they seemed to lose there effectiveness. suppose im here to see if any one has any answers, tips, anything? most people want to win the lotto or have fast cars, all i want is clear skin i dont think that is to much to ask?

any freed back would be appreciated thank you

Hey there Conan

bit of a late reply from your May 3rd post, bit i have only just joined this site.

I am 22, and i feel exacly the same as you do. My skin is up and down all the time! for a few weeks it is fine just the odd spot here and there, and then I have like 2 weeks of sore red blotchy skin which never seems to end. I am in one of those phases now, and like you I am stuck in doors and have been since Monday. So know exacly how you feel about staying in and I often avoid social events because of it. I should be going out with my girlfriend tonight for her freinds bday, but I just cant face it with me bein so low in confidence. I dont even want to meet eye contact with people when my skin is this bad. Luckily I have uni revision to do for my final year exams, but i cant concentrate! always thinkin bout my skin and trying to put stuff on it to help.

I have used all sorts, i cant be bothrerd to type what, but i am currently on oral tablets from the docs called Aknemin. These worked fantastic at first and I had 1 solid month of clear skin and was back to myself, but not anymore.

Wish i could find something that really worked, good to talk to someone about it though.

ive suffered with my skin since i was 14. it progressivly worse as i got older (i thought you were supposed to grow out of it??) now than i am in my adult years it has reached its fever point. everyday i am in so much pain from it- it feels like a minor burn, and itches like mad, with my skin falling off all the time, and my god does it look bad. i never go outside anymore unless i have to, i feel like a freak show walking around.

i feel like people look down on me or in disgust because of something i cannot help. i cry nearly everyday now. im currenly on a 4 a day course of fluxocillin, and seeing a dermatologst next week.

i dont have particularly high hopes though. Lord knows how much longer i can live with this.

Hi

I have just joined this site today and what a wonderful idea it is. :D I am a Nutritionist and Acne Specialist and run my own Independant Acne Clinic in Glasgow. I have helped 100's of people to achieve clear skin naturally without the use of prescription drugs, medicated skincare products and expensive treatments. I have recently written a book entitled Spotless - The Essential Guide to Getting Rid of Spots and Acne which is currently the fastest selling acne book within the UK.

The first thing I want to make clear to everyone, and that is what you choose to eat and drink has the greatest impact on your skin. "There is no scientific evidence that links diet to acne" is one of the most used yet incorrect statements being passed about regarding acne. There is plenty evidence! This statement keeps getting passed around simply to make people believe that they have to use medicated products and pharmaceutical drugs... simply put it is to keep you all putting money into their pockets.

What you have to understand is that acne is not simply a 'condition'. Acne is a symptom and it is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong. If you choose to take prescription drugs or use harsh medicated products then you are failing to listen to your body. If you want to treat acne then I urge you to treat it naturally and find the root cause of it.

The western diet that we all love is simply not a good one and we all eat too much dairy, saturated fat, wheat, yeast and sugar. These are the main culprits that cause acne.

At my clinic I ask everyone to complete a food diary and I would suggest that you all do the same. Take a diary of everything that you eat and drink over the course of a week and note beside it your skin condition. Nearly everyone that I treat can quite clearly see from their diary what food is causing their skin to produce spots. What causes spots for one person can be quite different to what causes skin problems for another person hence the reason why the diet v acne debate continues. If you eat a lot of sugar then give it up for two weeks and see what happens. If you eat too much dairy then give it up for two weeks. It may just be that you are drinking too many fizzy drinks or you could be intolerant to gluten. Your food diary will give you a clear indication of what you should give up.

Spotless is a result of 15 years of research into how doctors from around the world treat acne. I studied acne simply because I had acne from the age of 13 until 26. I tried everything my GP had to offer and all in all it just made my skin worse. I discovered that I was intolerant to dairy products and as soon as I stopped eating dairy then my skin cleared up (this may not be the root cause of your acne). Due to the prescription drugs that I took during my teenage years, I suffered very bad health during my 30's and I would urge everyone using this site to avoid prescription drugs if at all possible. Prescription drugs come with side effects and I am continually treating people at my clinic not just for their acne but for the side effects that they have been left with due to the drugs they have taken in the past to treat their acne.

I am happy to help anyone free of charge and you can email me either through this site or direct info@clinicforacne.com.

I've had acne troubles since my early teens. It finally slowed down a bit but it makes you feel a little ridiculous have noticeable zits and blackheads all over your face when you're over 30.

Blackheads started out being the minority but have now turned into being the majority of my problem. Especially on my nose. I can't even count how many blackheads I have on my nose. It's ridiculous.

I did find a site that talks about a tool you can use to pluck out each individual blackhead (I'm gonna be here a while lol). Here's a link to the blackhead tool post I read first http://www.comedoneextractor.org/blackh ... head-tool/

I was searching for help and advice and came across this. Conan almost described how I feel word for word.
I'm almost 25, had acne since I was 12. Half my life has been taken over by it and I can't remember not having it.
I can't remember the last time I was happy. I've never had a girlfriend and I haven't had a social life for years. Not even sure I remeber how to make friends. Hate having to go to work and rewarding myself with things I like such as gigs even gets to me because it means being around literally thousands of people. All this probably makes it worse. It's a horrible vicious cycle and I'd give anything to be able to break it. I'm not living my life. I just exist and I don't even want to do that because it's horrible. I wake up in a morning and my skin looks worse than it did the night before. It never stops.

I've tried god knows how many medications and doctors don't seem that bothered about helping at all.
I don't even want to think about how much money I've spent over the years on scams and products which don't do anything. In fact, in some cases, a product not doing anything would have been a welcome outcome, as opposed to it making things worse.

Over-the-counter creams seem to burn my skin and make it crack. I can use antiseptic creams but I've been piling that on for years. Pretty sure my skin's totally desensitised to it now.

Out of ideas, out of hope. My doctor once said that we'd have to try and get rid of it by early 20's otherwise I'd probably have it for most of my life. Five years later and it's not better than it was then. The thought of spending my adult life like this makes me feel like ending it.

There has to be some way of breaking the cycle, surely? It's not impossible to calm the breakouts and just have the odd spot now and then instead of full-on, inflamed, painful acne, is it?

Hi all,

Ive had acne since i was 16. Cystic acne on my back and on my face also.

Its ruined my confidence thats for sure. On the diet side ive been eating gluten free and dairy free for years now and it hasnt cleared it up. I usually drink plenty of water and eat realtively small amounts of sugar. Give in to biscuits and cake occasionally but avoid fizzy drinks and any excessive intake. i eat lots of fruit. I havent cut out yeast or red meat because theres a limit to how many things i can remove from my diet although I am thinking of trying a spell without red meat just to test it.

Hey everyone!

I have also had acne since I was about 13 years old. At first it wasn't that bad, like only some pimples here and there. But when I grew older and I moved to an other state, I got more pimples and it kills me. Sometimes I just wanna cry the whole day, but I try not to think about it. I say to myself that I don't want to look in the mirror to see my face , but I have to. When I hang out with my friends they treat me as if nothing is happening. Sometimes I ask myself if it is me that is stressing too much or is it them that it doesn't bother them. I mean, seriously, they are very nice to me and don't talk about it. I don't know if it is not to hurt me or if it really doesn't bother them. What do you think?

Best wishes!
