Athletes Foot

Being treated for fungal nail infection (which has partially come off the nailbed and thick and discoloured) for 16 months taking Mykored daily but suffer from ongoing athletes foot. Will I have to have the nail removed to stop the condition?

Thank you, Claire

Re: Athletes Foot

Fungal nail infections are known as onychomycosis. It is best that nail clippings are taken by your doctor and sent for mycology so that the fungus responsible can be identified. If these are positive for fungal infection, it is usually best that you are treated with oral anti-fungal tablets. Topical anti-fungal preparations are usually only effective if the fungal infection is treated early. Once it causes the nail to thicken they are often not strong enough so tablets for 3 to 6 months may be needed. Tablet treatment can have risks and side-effects and may need to be monitored with blood tests so its best you discuss your nail problem with your GP or dermatologist.
