Lichen planus (and oral lichen planus)

Long story sorry

I developed an Abscess under tooth last November.Given 5 days of antibiotics amoxicillin .
Dentist later found a crack. Could not get back to dentist until 9/12. Meanwhile got a really really bad cold. Mouth full of ulcers and cold sores and tongue really really painful. Hurt to eat or drink hot or cold. Went back on 19/12 to have tooth filled with antiseptic for Xmas hols and dentist said to see GP. Managed to get to see Dr on Monday 24/12. She said I had oral thrush. Gave me more Daktarin, a weeks supply of Fluconazole 50mg and a liquid mouthwash cum annestectic called Benzydamine. Went to dentist on 2 January ready for root canal work to be told tooth was cracked totally in two and had to come out. He took it out and said it smelt very bad. Tongue still hurting though. And still got mouth ulcers and cold sores. Dentist referred to oral specialist. 22/1/20
Oral surgeon thinks it’s Lichen Planus. Said he’s seen a handful of times where the rash on skin also appears. My wrists and arms are now full of spots. Most likely due to my malabsorption and lack of immunity problems. Prescribed a steroid mouthwash which hopefully should clear it up. Given Prednisolone

Meanwhile arms getting worse and also at top of legs and around anus area. These then burst , allowing infection into my leg with lymphoedema. This caused cellulitis. I had to have intravenous antibiotics. By now it’s mid March and Covid is rearing it’s head. After chasing my GP up got an emergency appointment at the nearest skin specialists, a mere 1 ½ hours drive away. They said I definitely had lichen planus, gave me more cream but couldn’t help with my mouth and said they would refer me to the dental hospital. In June I asked my GP to chase it up and eventually they agreed to do a telephone consultation in July. Then said they have to see me in person and will make an emergency appointment hopefully in September. (Still waiting I hasten to add).
The spots on my wrists and arms have mainly cleared up and I am presuming that the meagre amount of sunshine we get up here in the borders area has helped clear it up together with the cream but no on the inside on my thighs. Obviously they cannot get sun to them, as for a start I have to wear a class 4 full length compression stocking on one. I am petrified that they will get worse again and give me cellulitis again. How can I clear the legs up in particular. Still applying the steroid cream.

Re: Lichen planus (and oral lichen planus)

So sorry to hear about your lichen planus!

You may like to ask your GP or dermatologist to prescribe a strong steroid ointment for your skin (e.g. dermovate), protopic ointment for your skin fold areas and if needed you can have a steroid mouth wash. If this does not help powerful oral medications like ciclosporin or oral retinoid are also available form your dermatologist.

I hope this is helpful.
