Psoriasis getting worse with age?

Does psoriasis get worse with age …. I have had it for 20 years and I used to have spells of not having it and just a small flare but recently have noticed I seem to continuously have it somewhere on my body – is this normal?

Many thanks.

Re: Psoriasis getting worse with age?

Dear June,

I am sorry to hear that your psoriasis is getting worse. I am afraid sometimes it happens. However there are a lot of treatments available which ranges from topical treatment such as Enstilar foam to UVB phototherapy to old fashioned tablets like methotrexate, to newer oral medications like Otezla, to injections such as secukinumab and skyrizi. I am sure there is something which is ideal for you.

With Best Wishes,

Re: Psoriasis getting worse with age?

Dear June,

Thank you for your question, some patients with psoriasis do notice that it can get worse over time.

If the plaques of psoriasis are persisting it might be useful to consider alternative prescription treatments. These can range from topical creams and ointments (which contain Vitamin D, steroids or coal tar) which are available from your GP, to hospital based treatments such as UV light treatment.

Psoriasis can flare up for a number of other reasons including stress, changes in diet and weight and seasonal variation. A mediterranean diet can be helpful for psoriasis and one research study showed that eating salmon (maximum twice a week) and olive oil was associated with better control of skin symptoms.

Best wishes
