Enlarged prostate

I've recently been told I've got an enlarged prostate. I was finding I was needing to pee a lot. I am waiting for a follow up appointment but am wondering if this is something that can be treated with medication, can be fixed or will be with me for life?

Any information prior to seeing the specialist would be useful and are there any specific questions I should be asking them?

Enlarged prostates usually lead to problems with voiding/weeing itself. This can be hesitancy to start, slow flow, striating and intermittent stream, incomplete emptying and dribbling at the end.
Storage symptoms of frequent urination, urgent urination and nocturne- getting up at night are more likely due to an overactive bladder but can be a secondary feature of the enlarged prostate making the bladder try harder and hence it gets more sensitive. (You might have this)
The guidelines to investigating you as a specialist are- history, examination including rectal im afraid!
Then a flow test to measure outflow and residual volume, possible an ultrasound of the urinary tract, and IPSS prostate symptom score, a urine infection test and perhaps a PSA/kidney function blood test if indicated.
IPSS can be done here if you want to impress the doctor!

Treatments can be non medical ie reducing fluids in the evening, avoiding coffee, alcohol, treating constipation.
Then medical is an alpha blocker such as tamsulosin or alfuzosin to relax the prostate or finasteride/dutasteride to shrink it.
Last on the list is prostate surgery to improve the flow physically.
For you i would think trying an alpha blocker might be a reasonable medical start if your symptoms warrant this. Hope that helps.

Re: Enlarged prostate

Dear sir

These problems are usually very treatable with lifestyle and medications, and your urologist will advise when you see them. Very occasionally you need an operation but this is not common. So try not to worry, go and see your urologist, and with a few changes to lifestyle and possibly a couple of tablets, you're likely to get much better.

Cheers
