Topical steroid withdrawal

The leaflets that come in the box with topical steroids say that they are not to be used for children under 10, but the doctors have prescribed them for a very young child for their facial eczema. It also says not to use it on their face or groin, but the doctor said this is fine. Could you please help us to understand why the guidelines have these warnings, but why doctors advise otherwise? I am in my fourth year of topical steroid withdrawal because of the above, and I’m worried about it for other people.

Thank you, Heba

Re: Topical steroid withdrawal

Dear Heba,

Thank you for your question. The strength and duration of prescribed topical steroids depends on the part of the body and age. Generally speaking 1% hydrocortisone cream and ointment are safe even in your children on face and skin folds as instructed by your dermatologist.

I hope this is helpful.
