Exercising and sensitive skin

After I do exercise or a workout in the morning, my skin feels very sensitive and inflamed for the rest of the day – how can I manage this as I don’t want to stop exercising particularly in a lockdown!

Re: Exercising and sensitive skin

Dear Diane

I am sorry to hear your skin gets sensitive with exercise. Exercise is excellent for your health so definitely keep working out. Reducing sensitivity after exercise revolves around getting out of workout wear as soon as possible after exercise, having a not to hot shower, using soothing moisturisers and avoiding any triggers.

Tips to help reduce your skin getting very irritated after include:
1. Have a no warmer than body temperature shower immediately after exercising. Keep the shower to 5minutes. Pat your skin dry, do not rub it dry as rubbing can exacerbate sensitivity. Use a shower wash that is soothing to the skin such as ones containing lipids, ceramides and Niacinamide. Avoid fragranced body washes or washes containing SLS which may dry the skin out to much and increase sensitivity
2. Apply a soothing, cream based moisturiser onto your slightly damp skin immediately after showering. Moisturise from top to toe. Look for products containing Niacinamide and Ceramides which help repair the skin barrier and glycerin and Hyaluronic acid which help keep the skin well hydrated. Look for skincare brands specialising in sensitive skin and read online reviews of the products
3. Wear loose fitting, cotton based clothing after exercise- avoid leggings and sports bras as the friction may provoke more sensitivity
4. Keep cool during after working out. Use mists of cool water to refresh the skin and drink cool plain water during.
5. Avoid foods and drinks that may exacerbate sensitivity before you exercise. This may be caffeine containing drinks or spicy foods

best of luck
