My mother has never put on sunscreen in her life and assures me that her leathery skin doesn’t need it at her age. I disagree as she looks like she has baked for years but I am sure she should still be putting cream on?

Thank you for your question.

UV radiation has a cumulative effect on our skin and as we get older we may be more susceptible to sun damage as our skin is thinner, offering less protection from UV damage.

Additionally, our immune system weakens with age, meaning that any damage caused by UV radiation is less likely to be repaired when we are older.

I would recommend wearing sunscreen regardless of age, as even one severe sunburn can increase your risk of developing sun damage or skin cancer. Hats and sunglasses are also essential in terms of sun protection.
