IBS and diverticulosis

I have IBS and diverticulosis and would like to know if they can cause the following please :-

1. Difficult to lose weight
2. Hbac1 levels to give you pre-diabetes
3. Tiredness

I do not eat a lot as these illnesses will not allow me. I eat fairly healthy and I exercise but I find it difficult to lose weight and I get tired at times.

I am also wondering if my stress levels cause my Hbac1 level to be slightly more than they should be.

I need to feel more motivated, less stressful and lose weight please.

Hi

Thank you for your question.

Neither IBS or diverticulosis can cause weight gain or make it more difficult to lose weight - there is no evidence to suggest this. Although IBS can result in fatigue and tiredness, which may make it more difficult to be motivated to take more exercise, perhaps.

Having a larger body size can be a cause of pre-diabetes and in particular having a large waist size, but again there is no evidence to suggest that diverticulosis or IBS can cause this I'm afraid. Sometimes people do suffer from bloating and distension which can increase waist size but this usually happens with meals and most people will wake in the morning with a flat stomach. This is not the same as weight gain, though. I am also not sure if stress causes high HbA1C but you could ask you doctor about that perhaps.

You can read more here about diverticulosis https://gutscharity.org.uk/advice-and-i ... r-disease/ and here about IBS https://gutscharity.org.uk/advice-and-i ... -syndrome/.

For the stress side of your symptoms it might be helpful to have a look here https://www.theibsnetwork.org/stress/

It might also be useful to consider if you are sleeping well and you can read about that on the NHS website here https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/sleep-and-tiredness/.
I hope that helps

Kind regards

Julie

Hello Dr

Does IBS cause autoimmune diseases and how do we improve and optimise our gut good bacteria naturally?

Hi Nadiarib

Please see the how to increase good gut bacteria post for the answer to the question about how to increase good bacteria naturally. Also the answer to the question about does IBS cause autoimmune disease is also answered by the post titled IBS and autoimmune correlation.
