Seeking advice for daughter

Should the dermatologist check the viability of hair follicles? My daughter has extensive alopecia areata. She’s been offered steroid injections on her scalp, which I don’t think she will tolerate (due to learning disability and anxiety). The consultant hasn’t checked her scalp. Hair loss continues …. Where do I seek advice about wigs etc?

Re: Seeking advice for daughter

Thank you for your posting your question. Advice regarding wigs can be sought from the orthotics department of your hospital, the consultant may need to refer your daughter. Most people are entitled to one NHS wig per year. Also consider looking at the resources available on the Alopecia UK website: https://www.alopecia.org.uk/wigs
There are several management options for alopecia and all will be guided by a thorough history and examination with relevant investigations. Your daughter would likely benefit from an individualised approach that takes into account treatments that she would be comfortable with trying. You can always seek a second opinion if you are not sure. The most important aspect of treatment will be building a trusting relationship between yourself, your daughter and the treating physician.
