My son who is 12 has started with acne on his forehead/nose. Please could you recommend what to use? He has sensitive skin and has a condition called Neurofibromatosis type 1.

The treatment I would recommend for your son’s acne depends on the severity. If it’s very mild, over the counter skincare may be enough. A non-comedogenic (does not block pores) moisturiser and a daily face wash may be enough. Creams containing benzoyl peroxide applied thinly before bedtime can be helpful but can irritate the skin if you say your son has sensitive skin. If there is no improvement with skincare or if the acne is moderate or severe, see your GP as antibiotics are usually very effective but need a prescription. They are typically taken for a few months to fully clear the acne. Scarring and cystic acne will be referred to the hospital as this usually needs a strong treatment called Isotretinoin (also called Roaccutane or Accutane).
