Infant acne

BSF and talkhealth are teaming up to offer an online expert clinic on children's skin. Sometimes it's hard to forget that little one's skin can be more sensitive than ours, from nappy rash to cradle cap, youngsters are at risk of skin irritation. This online clinic will give you the perfect opportunity to ask questions about your child's skin that are easy to miss in the GP surgery.

Infant acne

My son (will be 6-7 weeks old when the clinic runs) is currently suffering with what I’ve been told by the GP is infantile acne. It started on his cheeks, but now has spread to the back of his neck and in his hair. It’s been apparent for 2 weeks now. It flares up when he is warm/distressed and then calms down.

Can you tell me a bit about infantile acne? How long should I expect this to last for? And what can be the cause of the “acne”? Is there anything I can do to help shift it?

I have attached some images too.

Thanks,

Rosie

Re: Infant acne

Dear Rosie,

It is thought to be genetic in origin and lasts a few months. Benzoyl peroxide gel can help. You can read more here https://dermnetnz.org/topics/infantile-acne .
I hope this is helpful.
Kind regards
