Asking on behalf of my boyfriend...

I am emailing in for my boyfriend – we have a great sex life but sometimes he has problems getting and keeping an erection – he is 28… He doesn’t want to discuss or talk about it to me. What would you suggest I do or say to him? It's very difficult to know what the right thing is to do/say.

Re: Asking on behalf of my boyfriend...

Thanks for taking the time to post. Im sorry to hear your boyfriend is struggling to maintain an erection but reassured to hear you say you have a healthy sex life; which is ultimately the most important thing for you both.

Losing an erection earlier than one wants (early detumescence) is not uncommon. There can be a variety of causes such as performance anxiety, premature ejaculation, as well as problems related to blood flow or previous trauma. It must be said that in the vast majority of young men, there is no correctable organic cause.

The initial strategies include reassurance that this isn't uncommon, and I always encourage couple to talk openly. This ca be followed up with basic examination to ensure there isn't an anatomical problem causing issues and blood tests. If despite conservative measures the issue doesn't improve, we would consider pharmacological agents such as sildenafil (viagra) in the first instance.
