When having a smear test I have been told that I have the HPV virus present but no pre cancerous cells detected year on year. Can you please explain how this would be possible? (Julie)

Hi Julie, having the high risk HPV virus and having normal cervical cells is not uncommon. We know the high risk HPV virus puts women at risk of developing changes in their cervical cells but in a lot of women it does not do this and can clear without causing any problems. Knowing you have this virus is key so you can have regular screening. This means that if changes do occur we can pick them up early and offer treatment.
There is every chance you may clear the virus spontaneously.
Have a look at Jo's Cervical Trust HPV FAQ's section for more information.
