Hi
My 19 yo daughter has been putting on weight over the last year or so despite having a calorie deficit. She has been tested for thyroid activity and this is normal . She has had other blood tests and nothing proven. GP has said that’s it and no other tests available- my daughter is very unhappy with her weight
any suggestions /advice appreciated

Hi Pete1966,

Thank you for posting about your daughter. Apart from thyroid and other tests, has she had her hormones checked? Also she may want to consider getting tested for food intolerances as sometimes its not just the calories in a food that can cause weight gain, but whether her body is intolerant (not allergic) to a particular food.

We are soon launching a support programme for weight issues. Please find more information here:

I am sorry to hear about your daughter gaining weight with no explaination. I recall I gained weight in about my early 20's. I didn't overeat: I just got curvy. I had been fairly skinny as a teenager, too. I do miss being skinny. I assume the doctor will advise exercise and avoiding too many calories in the diet. This, of course, would mean counting calories. Still, I wouldn't put your daughter on too strict a diet: if you completely stop sweet treats your daughter will actually crave sweet foods more. You need to have a certain leeway with your daughter's diet. She should only start gentle exercise too: too much will be a shock to the system and make continuing to exercise difficult.

As for other reasons for gaining weight: hormones and the end of adolescence can mean the body finishing its changes and so resulting in weight gain. But the doctor will know more about the effect of these changes.

Anyhow, I do hope I've helped. I cannot explain the reasons for your daughter's weight gain but she's not alone. Again, taking it slowly when losing weight is best.

If she is unhappy with her weight, she may need to explore options. Going to the gym, eating more vegetables, running more, etc. She has lots of options. Perhaps you can help her figure out what works best for her.
