Thyroid Cancer treatment

From discussions with other thyroid cancer patients nationally, it would appear that treatment differs between UK hospitals? Is there any consistency and recognised guidelines for the treatment of thyroid cancer in the UK. If not, why not?
If there are guidelines, what determines the type of treatment given i.e., total versus partial thyroidectomy; Radio Iodine Ablation or not? What are the markers?

Re: Thyroid Cancer treatment

There are guidelines produced by The British Thyroid Association and published sometime ago.

Every patient varies and treatment has to be tailored to suit the particular patient within the guidelines described

Re: Thyroid Cancer treatment

Hi Janet,

The British Thyroid Association's (BTA) Guidelines for the Management of Thyroid Cancer (2007) that Professor Lazarus refers to above are available on line through the British Thyroid Foundation (BTF) website: http://www.btf-thyroid.org/images/stori ... s_2007.pdf.

You may also find our booklet Thyroid Cancer - For Patients By Patients helpful - it can be ordered from our website http://www.btf-thyroid.org/index.php?op ... Itemid=242. This booklet is written and reviewed by people who have themselves experienced thyroid cancer and it includes their experiences of their thyroid cancer journey as well as medical information based on the latest guidelines.
