To avoid butter or not?

I have heard conflicting reports about whether butter should be avoided with a dairy allergy. Some say there is no protein in butter, and the protein is the allergenic part. Other say it is only in ghee that there is no protein. Still others suggest avoiding butter altogether. Thoughts?

Re: To avoid butter or not?

butter i indeed mainly fat rather than protein and indeed, in allergy it is the protein that is the problem but many milk allergics will react even to the small amount of protein that finds it's way in to butter so I advise my patients to avoid it.
