Unusual discharge

I don't have children and a few years ago I had the mirena coil fitted as I had a problem with my hormone levels. This has been fine up until a couple of months ago when I started with a constant discharge which is sometimes a brownish or yellowish colour. I haven't had a period for nearly 4 years since having the coil fitted, but I feel like I have period pains and discomfort in my stomach. I went to my GP who asked a few questions about my eating habits, felt my stomach and said I had IBS, but I’m not so sure as I changed my eating habits as per their instructions but still have the same problems, and don’t understand how period pains and discharge can be linked to IBS – could the problems be linked to the coil or something else?

Re: Unusual discharge

A brownish discharge with Mirena is quite common, brown often means small amounts of blood which are not seen straight away and "old" blood turns brown. If your Mirena has been in place for 4 years, it may be starting to wear off and hence not controlling the bleeding from the womb lining quite as well as in the past. It is worth having swabs taken to check for infection. If these are clear and the symptoms are troublesome, then it would be worth considering having the Mirena changed a little earlier than the usual 5 years.
