Strep B

Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with Strep B but dont really know much about it. My GP says it was probably confused with thrush but now i have been given antibiotics for it.

Will i keep getting this? I thought i was having recurrent thrush but if it was strep b does that mean i wont keep getting thrush like symptoms which come and go?

Any info would be great, thanks!

Re: Strep B

Hi - Strep B is a naturally occurring bug which is found in the vagina in about one third of normal healthy women. It rarely causes any discharge, and most specialists in the UK do not test for it in pregnancy for this reason. Very rarely it can cause infection in a newborn infant, and the policy is different in the USA, where women are tested and routinely given antibiotics.
If you're not pregnant, then it's debatable as to whether treatment for Strep B will make much difference to any vaginal discharge you may have. Best to go to a sexual health clinic where they can check out the discharge under the microscope, and make an accurate diagnosis on the spot.

Re: Strep B

Hi, thanks for your reply. My gp has told me that if I ever got pregnant I would have to have test every two weeks as if I got it again it could cause a miscarrage. Is this correct?

Re: Strep B

It is very unlikely to cause a miscarriage. You should have a vaginal swab taken during pregnancy and if Strep B is present, you would be offered antibiotics during labour, to reduce the risk of the baby picking up the infection during birth.
