Unusual period
Hi, I'm 45, had very light periods all my adult life (3 days max), no problems at all. I took Cerazette for approx 2 years, but came off the pill just over six months ago. Since then I have not had real periods, just very light, occasional spotting (accompanied by minor cramps, spots etc so assumed these were perimenopausal periods). However, nine days ago I began bleeding and haven't stopped since. It's quite heavy by my usual standard, with some clotting, although nothing much in the way of cramps. Any idea why I should be having such a heavy period after such a long time please?

Could be a perimenopausal phenomenon but guidelines say that at 45 you should be referred for an urgent check up and examination, so your GP will be able examine your womb and cervix, or at least refer you to someone at the hospital who will. There's usually a rapid access clinic for this.
