Flare up - why why why?
My 6 year old son goes from clear skin to itching like mad within minutes, sometimes after exercise, sometimes not. I spent last week getting his eczema under control after a very bad flare up due to splinters (throwing himself against a shed in the playground - it doesn't help that he is the most active child on the planet), he had first bald patch so shaved his head to a grade 1 and was all healing up nicely. Goes to school and after lunch is driven "mad" by need to itch - now back at square one with drawing blood on scalp and legs/arms/hands. When he was a baby I had to restrain him to get him to sleep. I've had eczema, urticaria and have been clear since my 30's (apart from weeping hands when he was a baby coping with nappies and his washing/creaming regime). I feel like driving to the consultants house and leaving him there for the weekend so someone can understand what he is going through. Treatments work for a while, then stop. I don't know how to help him and feel useless. Doctors still give out SLS creams that are bad for him and continue to patronise me. Contacted consultant again who on last visit managed to type up all my family history wrong in the follow up letter.... does anyone care???? help! Vicky (and I know there isn't a magic wand).

Hi Vicky,
Sorry to hear that you feel no doctor is helping you much ..
My baby girl had the same thing, one moment clear skin, the next all red. She got better after a one-time oral steroid course but I know of other children who didn't find it working for them so well.
Wet wraps, allergy testing, cleaning bacteria..all looked into? Take care,
Mei

If you are not happy with the treatment plan that your current specialist has advised for your son then ask to be referred to somebody else. We have seen many specialists with our son who is 8 years old (was diagnosed with severe atopic eczema at 6 weeks) but we have now been with our currents specialist for about 3 years and feel that we have finally found the right person to treat our son. He has a great bedside manner, he listens and most of all we trust him. His team of specialist nurses are also fantastic.

Hi ,
I want to ask how does really a flare ups happened with your kids?
Because with my 4 yrs old daughter, whenever something triggers her eczema from environment to something she ate, she can go from clear skin to red and hot patches of rashes everywhere and very itchy in few minutes of exposure, but after few more minutes it goes away and back to clear again, except for the rash that got wounded due to constant scratching, on her lips corner and hands.... is it like that with your kids?
Goodday.

Hi
Usually my toddler's flare-up pretty quickly, but doesn't subside so fast, so it's good that your child's did The flare-up is a result of inflammation in the skin, so normally won't subside without treatment.
Take care,
Mei

Re: Flare up - why why why?
My daughter has random flares also Have you kept a food diary to see if a food is causing it?
My 4 year old has seen every single kind of "ist" there is out there to help with eczema and cellulitis. We had a pulmonologist because when she had a flare it always turned to croup (anytime she received vaccines or the flu shot 5 days later we knew eczema was coming and also a respiratory problem), we had a gastro because she seemed to have reflux, we thought she had auto immune disease. ALL of her ailments were cured when she got on a study with her dermatologist. We began using a product called CLn body wash. It takes the place of the bleach baths and is used like a body wash. I know lots of doctors are recommending bleach baths for eczema patients and this is so much easier and some much gentler and it works! She went from 40% of her body covered to 2% in 12 weeks. We now only trust the CLn products with our family.
We recently had a flare up due to chlorine and we washed for two days with Cln and it is gone!

i feel him. my eczema was horrible when i was a child. i no longer have it now. nothing helped at that time, my dad spent a lot of $ to ease my pain but oh well temporarily yes but i scratched my skin back after an hour. i cried whenever i'd to shower because it was hurting so bad when water touched the skin. My father & grandfather had eczema & i got it from them. i'd to avoid dairy products & when i was a teenager i discovered that watery fruits! triggered my eczema.

Re: Flare up - why why why?
Flare ups are awful. I don't know if it would help you but I developed a system to help respond to my son's eczema in an effort to deal with the randomness of the flare ups (I'm a bit of a nerd).
I categorised the flare ups into those that were related to: temperature, infection, dryness, environment allergens, ingested allergens. The first three are aspects of the eczema itself that could lead to him itching or scratching which would result in a flare up. The second two are things that could lead to a flare up without his intervention.
I'd use these to guide me in working out what could be behind a particular issue. He was allergy tested (skin prick and RAST) and had several allergies (independent of his eczema). He also had a few sensitivities. Keeping a food diary helped track down some of the offenders and testing him with laundry detergents and the like helped but never eliminated flare ups.
I used the categories to help identify some of his triggers and work out what combination of treatments might help him most. Wet wraps, a tepid bath or wash cloth, moisturizer and antihistamine were our go to responses to calm down bad flare ups.

Hey everyone,
I am sending everyone well wishes - as a mum I know how hard it is to feel so helpless when your children are facing difficulties.
Talkhealth are currently looking for people to trial and review ScratchSleeves, these mitts both stay on and their soft silk mitts minimise scratching damage, they are available in sizes from 0-3m to 6-7y. We are currently looking for people who have children who suffer with eczema to try this product, you must be willing to write a short review at the end of the trial and give a rating out of 5.
Take a look at the link below and sign up if you think they may be of some help to you. Alternatively please feel free to share the link with anyone who may be interested.
