Stressed out mom needs advice

My 8 month old daughter has eczema, she has had it since birth but now she's getting flare ups her doctor gave her an oral supplement to her cream she took it for five days and it was suppose to stop the flare ups but instead it got worst! She has horrible scratching in her eyes, legs, hands, head, and ears it prevents her from sleeping and eating and as a mom I am frustrated and stressed out from seeing little one suffer from this. I have tried putting lotion and her steroid creams but she just takes it off with her hand when she rubs it, nothing seems to work! Does anyone have any tips on what I can do to help my baby girl? Please.

Re: Stressed out mom needs advice

Hi Natalie's Mommy,

Sorry to hear that.. what's the oral supplement? It is not common (I think) for supplements to be given to children this young.. they should be having nutrition from milk and the starting solid foods. Moreover, except for probiotics, other supplements are not solidly proven to reduce eczema in children (from what I know).

Do see a doctor who specializes in children and in a related field - dermatology, allergy, immunology.

Meanwhile, consider bleach bath (if not weeping rashes), wet wraps, minimize common allergens like house dust mites, detergent, non-common clothing and keep her room cool and keep her fresh. Have fun soaking in bath oil (oatmeal) and moisturize your child immediately. Don't rub dry, pat dry.

At this point, while keeping a good skincare routine, do urgently see a specialist, particularly one where allergy testing is available. It's very difficult to pinpoint what's triggering the eczema, easier if there's some reference point. Distract your child lots, mine watched signing time. It's very difficult, hang on there and drop by for support,

Hugs!

Hi sorry your going through this, been there. There is a spcialist eczema nurse who runs a private clinic in Wales, called Emma and is great for advice on the phone, which is free. i am told she is really good, but have not spoken to her myself.

Re: Stressed out mom needs advice

I have found skinnies suits work wonders. They keep the creams on the skin and prevent scratching (you can get suits with mittens) and you can get them on prescription. My little girl has had them since she was small (now 3) and she wears them under her clothes in the day and instead of PJs at night. It is heart breaking at first because they do look like bandages but now my little one hates pjs and insists on her suits for bed!

I saw a NHS dietician and she advised a probiotic supplement and multivitamin (vitamin D in particular).

Like I have said in previous posts don't be afraid to try different doctors and keep pestering if things don't work.

Re: Stressed out mom needs advice

There are 2 different types of skinnies. One is silk and the other viscose. I am looking at changing to them from the dermasilk range.

LouiseBird - Do you use the silk skinnies or the viscose ones?

Hi Kelly

We use the silk ranges of suits, dermasilk on prescription. We tried viscose pillow cases and it was terrible flare all over Dans face and neck.

We also use the dermasilk garments but I had heard that the skinnies were a better fit. I might see if our GP will do a prescription for the silk skinnies for us to try. If not I can ask his specialist when he goes back in July.

Re: Stressed out mom needs advice

Sorry to hear about this. Going on my experience you might be best using a cream that is absorbed in to the skin rather than one that sits on the surface. Such creams can be applied more frequently. I opted for a natural baby cream by mama nature. This is not a barrier cream but it absorbs in and healed my sons eczema. Of course I cannot guarantee it will work in your case but it might be worth looking in to this cream or one like it. Hope this helps.

Re: Stressed out mom needs advice

I just the basic skinnies. They did give me the silk ones once by mistake and to be honest they didn't seem to make any difference to her skin. I would rather have more of them (they normally let me have 3/4 sets every 3 months) on prescription.
