emollient creams just not working

Hi

I was hoping someone could help...My 2 yr old has eczema and was on diprobase which a few weeks ago seemed to stop working, her skin was flaking every 5 mins after I applied it and she was itchy and I couldnt moisture her quick enough, so the Doc suggested Cetraben which worked a dream, I have never seen her skin so smooth - that was until 3 days later where her face is bright red and hot to touch and her arms and neck were also red and hot to touch. I read online that there are allergic reactions to cetraben so I have stopped using it, but now her skin is back to flaking and bright red. Doc gave Dermol which I am using for last few days, but its not making much of a difference - her face is still red and her skin is just flaking off no matter how much i moisture her. She does have allergies though they are food and I know its not that and she has finished a course of antibotics a few weeks back.....has anyone else experienced a reaction to an emollient or suggest something I can suggest to my GP - she doesnt look like my child anymore!

Hi!

Sorry to hear of the flare-ups, hugs. Your child has allergy test taken? Not sure if there's more than food involved, for instance, pollen/dust mite/ pet dander? Reaction to moisturizer is increasing, though it's not quite sure why... Patch test may not be that accurate, may be good idea to choose a product without the top irritants http://eczemablues.com/2012/02/sensitiv ... -to-avoid/

Fragrance
Preservatives
Parabens
Proplyene Glycol
Lanolin
Dye

However, moisturizing is very important to protect and lubricate the skin barrier of a child with eczema. Flare-ups that are so severe needs seeing specialist I think, the doc you're seeing is specialist for kids eczema/immunology? Antibiotics isn't very good for a child, though it's to prevent infection. Update us and take care, hugs,

Re: emollient creams just not working

Thank you for that - thats really helpful.

I have gone back to Diprobase as even the dermol wasnt working - so even though it isnt as effective as it used to be I know she isnt reacting to that. She has a dermatologist appt at the end of April - so I just need to hold on until then.
Since going back to Diprobase redness has gone and its just gone back to flaky - I give her oat baths and gently rub the dry skin off - I just cant pinpoint what has caused her skin to change - apart from the antibotics and will discuss with dermatologist and get a patch test done as she reacted really badly to the Cetraben.

Hopefully I can get consultant to check for other factors as well - and at least try to understand triggers and what to keep her away from.

Do ask about allergy test, wet wrap and whether for your child, swimming is recommended (as swimming is a fun way to kill staph bacteria on the skin, but not all kids can tolerate).

Take care,

Re: emollient creams just not working

Definitely agree about the allergy testing. There are so many triggers that can cause a flare up... it's so frustrating! Until you find something from the doctor that works, maybe take a really close look at the ingredient lists of your detergents/soaps/lotions/etc? I know with my girls, phthalates, parabens, etc all make their skin much worse.

If you are looking for something over the counter, I've had really good luck with TruKid products. All their stuff goes through patch testing and is accepted by the NEA... no parabens, phthalates, gluten, etc either! We use their Friendly Face Wash daily, and my little one loves the Bubble Podz.

I hope your kiddo gets some relief soon!

I also agree allergy tests could really help but they're a fight to get on NHS.

I recently started using a 100% natural, no chemical, no paraben, cream on my son which really cleared his skin up quickly, leaving it feeling lovely! The same company also has a body wash and shampoo too which we now use and he has never been so clear before.

Just taking out all of the harsh chemicals in creams/steroids/body wash has made such a difference to him it's amazing! X

Hi sorry to hear that. But I recommend using TruKid Easy Eczema Therapy Cream Unscented. There are no chemicals or fragrances, it is safe for children with allergies.
