Alcohol and depression

As a partner to an ex RAF soldier who was dismissed for a heart condition, a son of an alcoholic and suffers from depression, I am at my wits end as to how he could receive help. Although admitting that he does have issues he has tried to get help several times but doesn’t believe that unless it is somebody that has been in a similar situation that he is in he won’t get help. When drinking he is depressed, selfish, inconsiderate, verbally abusive, forgets things, aggressive, intimidating, a bully, lies and has no motivation. When combined with depression his mood swings tend to worsen and he is unbearable to be around. Please can I have some advice on how to go the right way of getting help for him without triggering him. He is the loveliest person to be around when he is not drinking or depressed and it just pains me to see him this way.

Re: Alcohol and depression

Hi Anon

I can feel your frustration. As an ex-alcoholic, sober for many years and running my own clinic, I completely understand your partner's desperation too. Talking the problem through with those who have experienced the addiction, and then having their support, is paramount for any sort of long term recovery in my opinion.

First of all, he has recognized that he has a problem. That's a positive step. There is obvious option of AA, which is nationwide, and I am sure there would be meetings in your area. Would he consider that? Although I am not involved with AA or their methods, many have been successful using them.

I am sure you are at your wits end as nearest and dearest go through an awful time battling through this, and you are very welcome to contact me if I can be of further help.

Sarah.
