Narcolepsy
My psychiatrist has said I have narcolepsy, I've had all of the sleep tests done, I asked my dr to prescribe me modanifil to help me but she said it would have to be my psychiatrist who prescribed it, after a visit with my psychiatrist today he has said my dr has to prescribe it!! Meanwhile I'm stuck going backwards and forwards desperately looking for someone to help me before I go completely insane because of how tired I am!! Can you please tell me who should be helping me, do I just need to see a different dr??

Dear MoJo,
This unfortunately is a common problem and about health finance! It should not affect your care, which it has!
Your GP may not be “allowed” to prescribe the Modafanil so it will need to be prescribed by the Consultant. This should be straightforward. Where I work we arrange for a Community prescription that means I prescribe for the patients and the Modafanil is either sent direct to the patient or to their local pharmacy.
So in summary what I suggest is contact the Consultant or ask your GP to do so.

Re: Narcolepsy
Thank you.
Would modafinil also work with idiopathic hypersomnia?
My phyciatrist has said he's written to my dr, he's also said I don't need to see him anymore and should just deal with my dr, but she's still not helping, would going private make any difference?
Thanks

Re: Narcolepsy
Hi. I am sorry you are having such problems. It really should not be necessary to see someone privately. Narcolepsy is a long term condition and your medication will need monitoring. It is acondition that might be managed by the neurologists or sleep disorder specialists and so you may have fallen between these various specialists and someone needs to decide who should be supervising your care. You may need to contact your local Commissioning Group to explain the situation so that they can find you someone to prescribe and monitor your drugs. Your GP surgery should be able to tell you who to contact.
