Hi all, I also have posted this elsewhere. I have had severe eczema on my hands for many years and on my body fr my entire life. I had acrylic false nails applied last week because I figured that if my hands looked dreadful at least could have pretty nails. Within a week my eczema is so much better. I believe that this is because the nails are thicker and blunter than my own so even though still scratch I am unable to do so much damage. However,I do think it s wirth noting that when I googled this various Internet Sources suggest that acrylic nails and the glue used with them can actually cause eczema. I don't know about this. I simply know that I fully intend to continue wearing acrylic nails as long as my eczema continues to be this much better. I would also be interested to know if anyone else has found that false nails have a similar effect ( or an entirely opposite one!)

I have suffered from eczema all my life as a baby I suffered with it all over my body. My parents after getting fed up of what the doctors were saying with no improvements looked at alternative treatments. They heard that acupuncture was a form of treatment that some find works well. I went for acupuncture and as I was so small they used a "wand" instead of needles to carry out the procedure. Now I can only just remember going to these sessions so it cant have been at all painful for me. We dont know if it was the acupuncture or if i gradually grew out of the symptons but it definatly got a lot easier and pretty much non existant other then occassional flare ups in elbows and back of knees. That was until about 5 years ago when I started suffering from hand eczema! I dont suffer from it anywhere else now apart from the hands. Its been so bad that I have had cracks that are cms deep, cant move my hands, wearing the cotton gloves, waking up in the middle of the night scratching. Its just unbearable and no one who doesnt have it doesnt understand! My family all tell me to stop scratching but you cant and its such a relief when you do literally I would find anything that I can scratch my hands against! and it can look so awful you become so self conscious of it, I have been in tears so many times just from the pain and itching.
Anyway years of this constantly going to the doctors, seeing specialist, hundreds of steroid and emoilent creams and I felt like giving up. I personally dont like steroid creams I think they thin the skin when its already delicate and I just dont think they help in anyway unless its really really severe and I needed instant stopping of the itching. I have found that pure Olive oil soap is really good for washing (you can get it from pharmacies its not very expensive), aswell as sanex sensitive skin shower gels etc. and for general moisturising I have found simple moisturisers work well.
But back to my hands....the last few months my hands have cleared up so well! My left hand is completely clear and my right hand is pretty much clear apart from a little patch the size of 10p on the heel but its getting there and they havent been itchy at all! I have been constantly using NIVEA HAND BALM SOS. I really cant big it up enough. I must have tried every moisturiser available. I have only been able to find it in small tubes so it fits in my handbag quite well, you can get it from anywhere Ive seen it in boots, tescos etc. I put it on in the morning, whenever I have washed my hands and generally through the day if they feel a bit dry and just before I go to sleep. I guess everyone will respond differently to different creams but for me this is the best. Its slightly greasy so you dont need much but its much better then emoilents. As my hands have got better over the months Ive started using it not quite so constantly and there have been no flare ups and they feel moisturised for most of the day. When I went to see a specialist she said that basically you just have to keep moisturising which at the time got me really annoyed cos I was moisturising all the time! But she was right I just had to find what worked for me so I say try it!
My hands might be improved due to the weather I have found in the past they get worse when its wet and damp (I went to australia for a month it was boiling and my hands cleared up completely until I can home to wet miserable engaland) and it does get worse when Im stressed which I have been lately but its not actually been too bad I just keep using the cream!
Sorry for the essay but im so pleased my hands are clearing up! I have noticed though that the skin on my hands is still quite delicate and if I handle anything slightly rough it can easily cut my hands but I think the skin is thickening up a bit now. They are also quite scarred from the years of eczema. They arent massive scars like you would get from a cut but they are kind of wrinkly they look like the normal lines on palms but more of them if you get my meaning. Im gonna have the most ugly hands when im old! But not to worry they look a 100 times better then they did.
