Eczema and contraceptive implant

Hi, my daughter (aged 21) has eczema and has recently had a contraceptive implant inserted and it seems to be escalating her eczema. She tried the implant a few years ago and had a massive flare up so had it removed but was never sure the implant was to blame. Now it looks like it is definitely the culprit.
Is there anything she can do to reduce its effects?
Many thanks

Re: Eczema and contraceptive implant

Sorry to hear that.. seems like there are quite a few reports of aggravated eczema with Implanon http://patientsville.com/implanon/eczema.htm

I also found this article by NHS walk-in clinic doctor http://srh.bmj.com/content/familyplanni ... 4.full.pdf

After she noted patients with rash after the implant, it was written in the article that she adopted the following measures for future implants.. maybe you can reach out to her/ the clinic for more info since they are already aware of the possibility of rash..

First, we allow sufficient time after cleaning the skin with chlorhexidene solution to ensure that the skin is completely dry.
Second, we ensure that there is a sterile field with drapes, to minimise the risk of staphylococcus-colonised squamous epithelial cells from falling back onto the already cleansed skin.
Finally, an assessment of the patient’s skin and eczema status should be made as an implant
would arguably be best placed when their eczema is under optimal control.

Re: Eczema and contraceptive implant

Hello Catherine,
I have recently had the same issue although I had a depo provera injection instead of the implant. I had a bad flare up for a week or 2 then it started to calm down (although I have been on antibiotics to help calm my eczema as it had gotten badly infected over the last 6 months).

I am not a doctor, but my advice is just to hang in there. And if it is still bad, talk to a dermatologist. Personally, GP's have not been too helpful with my condition except to refer me to the dermatologist.

Regards,
Ellie
