Eliminating dairy, advice please?

Hello,

My 83 year old Mum has suffered from eczema on and off for many years, but in the last couple of years it has become the worst it’s ever been.
She’s been back and forth to the GP countless times and has been given different creams and ointments, including steroid creams, and she moisturises regularly but nothing seems to make much difference to her skin.
They have now prescribed her with steroid tablets to take for a week.

I’ve tried to convince my Mum for a while to eliminate certain foods from her diet, starting with dairy, to see if there is any improvement in her eczema. She was reluctant to give it a try as she enjoys milk and cheese etc, but now she has agreed to give it a go.
I’m just wondering how long she would need to try it for? Some websites say a few days, others say a few weeks.

Could anyone give me some advice please?

I would suppose a few weeks? Not sure but I suppose it's not that easy to identify if food is any issue especially with elderly skin.. is the skin very dry? Would a thicker cream help? Maybe consult a dermatologist whose research studies are into the elderly population as not all dermatologists focus on the elderly.. the other thing I can think of is look into other health conditions that may trigger skin rash for elderly.. hope her skin improves soon!

Re: Eliminating dairy, advice please?

Hi there.
I was born with eczema and in the last year, my skin has been hard to keep under control. In desperation for relief, I eliminated both dairy and gluten. My skin drastically improved. However, about a month later when I went to eat something with dairy, I had an allergic reaction. Additionally, when I went to have something with gluten about a month later, my digestive system could not handle it. My body got acclimated to no dairy and gluten and now eating small amounts of it results in annoying and uncomfortable consequences. While I'm glad my skin has improved, I now have a new lifestyle and haven't been able to eat dairy or gluten since (about 8 months). I've grown to be appreciative of this, but at first, it was a difficult transition. I thought this would be worth sharing.

Hi!

I have had chronic eczema for a long long time. A few years ago I had a HUGE flare up which I just couldn't manage. After going to the doctors multiple times and them telling me that there is NO way it could be the food I was eating, I went private and got a test done. I was told I had leaky gut syndrome which meant I was intolerant to a lot of foods :(
I cut them all out my diet and I was recommended that although I will start to see results, my gut lining would take at least 3 months to heal.

I hope this helps and good luck to your mum! :)
