Can emollients make skin worse initially?

How long should you persevere with an emollient if it makes your eczema redder after application, and itchier? Is this just something you need to go through?

Hi bluebear55,

Thank you for your post. We would urge you to check with your GP if there is another emollient to try as you could be reacting to any of the ingredients in that particular formulation.

Please check out our eczema child FREE support programme where there is advice about emollients for anyone, adults and children:

You may also want to check our client Chuckling Goat, who have probiotic lotions to soothe eczema and contains goat milk which reduces inflammation:

Kind regard

Don't think should persevere if the cream makes the skin worse.. can go for patch testing at dermatologist to see which ingredient is causing it.. could be something more common eg mineral oil which irritates some people's skin (but otherwise generally an useful ingredient for increased moisture).. take care, hope things work out

It seems the cream is giving you side effects. If it is making a difference then keep putting it on. It is not but making side effects worse then go back to the GP with your concerns. I would give it 2 months. It seems your eczema has gone deeper into the skin and its infected. The redness is a sign of blood under the skin or it could be a formation of rashes. Whatever the case go to the GP.
