Re: Enough

Hello

I'm sorry to hear you are struggling so much with your weight and eating. You don't give a lot of detail about why you struggle to control your eating but I wonder whether you are an emotional eater. Do you eat more or different kinds of food if you are upset or stressed? Have you gained weight at times when you are having a lot of stress in your life?

If you do see yourself as an emotional eater there are two important first steps to takling the problem. The first is to access some psychological therapy or counselling that will help you develop more helpful strategies for managing upset (so you are less reliant on food). Your GP can refer you to your local IAPT service (this stands for 'improvng access to psychological therapy').

Secondly you can get a better understanding of your eating habits by keeping a food diary. Every day record exactly what you eat and drink and at the same time write down any thoughts or feelings (or social situations) that affect your eating. Many people find that recording their food intake helps to give them a sense of control and makes it less likely you'll drift off track. Go back over the diary once a week or so; by reviewing times when your eating was less controlled you should learn about triggers and high risk situations and set up strategies to deal with these times.

I think the first step is to have a full conversation with your doctor about the help available. Some areas offer specialist weight management programmes or eating distress groups.

I hope you are able to access some support.
