Allergies in Babies

I wonder if anyone has any experience of anything like this please.

When my now 6 month old baby was 6 weeks, we gave her a couple of oz of aptimil. We have her a couple of oz for 3 days and on the 3rd day she was extremely sick, developed a rash and we ended up in hospital. We were told to try a different brand so tried SMA. This time the reaction was immediate and we were back at the hospital. Although not serious as such, for such a small baby it was very scary. She lost a lot of weight during this period.

We were referred to a paediatrician, who advised she has a cow's milk protein allergy and said he would rather we wean at 3 months than try any more formula.

I continued breastfeeding and when she was 5 months old, when we introduced some baby rice. Again, for the first couple of days she was fine so we moved to pear, mixed with baby rice. By this time she had developed excema, was sick, screaming in pain, rash, sick etc. On HV advice we stopped for a couple of days and just introduced baby rice. Same reaction.

We went back to the paediatrician, who said she also had a rice allergy. He said this was very uncommon. When she was 6 months old we saw a dietician, who gave us a list of things to introduce. Carrot, sweet potato and courgette were fine, apart from causing excema. On the second day of peas we had screaming, sick etc again so we stopped that. Yesterday we gave lentils and that was possibly the worst reaction so far. She only had a couple of lentils and about 7 hours later was screaming in pain for hours and the whole day's worth of milk came back up. Once that had happened, she was happy.

I am feeling quite isolated at the moment as the paediatrician has just said we have to just keep trying things as skn prick test don't work on someone so young, plus she has a delayed reaction so it would be difficult to see what she is reacting to. I was keen to stop breastfeeding and am finding it difficult to cope with pretty much exclusively breastfeedig at 6.5 months and each day wondering what allergy will appear next.

Has anyone else had anything like this? If so, what other foods is she likely to be allergic to?

Any help/adivce would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Re: Allergies in babies

Hi

I hope I can offer some suport and help. My children are now aged 2 and 5. Both have had eczema from within days of birth. We avoided egg as a known trigger until my son was a year old then 2 to 3 hrs later he reacted while I was out with great big red blotches coming up on his face and head. I was terrified but the doctors saw us out of hours and it was broght under control. My Daughter reacted to SMA milk mixed with her baby rice at 4 months old. She was in pain, screamed and was sick and her skin reacted, more than just the eczema. She was tested and had a full dairy allergy, which she still has 2 years on.

With both I was advised to keep a food diary and only introduce foods one at a time at least 5 days apart. So i had to cut myself off from friends giving their babies many foods. Slow and simple. Lentils are tough to digest. Go with root veg to start. It is heart breaking to see your baby suffer and I hope I can be of some support. I was told that until the child has been exposed to something once then an allergy cannot develope. So they have to hae had a food once, whatever the reaction before an allergy test can be carried out. My daughter id on a full dairy free diet and both children are on a nut, shelfiash free diet. I am just introducing foods.

When your baby reacts what does the hospital treat her with? Mine was chlorophenamine so I always carry this around, thankfully I do not need at this stage an epi pen. Keep in toch, I hope I can help by understanding. It is tough. We are told not to make food an issue, but it is a massive issue.

Re: Allergies in Babies

is there any chance you can be reffered to a immunologist? can you get to london for instance? skin prick tests can be done on the very young , and you may need some support in this area. what testing did you have to confirm the allergy to rice? the rice could have been cross contaminated with something else? however its a rare but not unheard of allergy, but mostly happens in japan!

the idea that a allergy can only develop if its given once before is a bit confusing. mainly because if you are dealing with a breastfed baby they are to a small extent exposed. That said, breastfeeding is still to be highly desired, if only for the protection from infection.
and then of course exposure to other common allergens can not be prevented, dog dander in carpets etc.
so really this sort of comment doenst support parents of allergic children very well, and is not helpful , nor a confidance builder.

i think the advice from theprevious poster is solid, simple veg, and new foods one at a time should be ok, and if possible keep breastfeeding for as long as you both need to.

your pead/gp can do a blood test , called a RAST, and that might be worth considering.

you do need to clearly identify every possible food allergen so that you can avoid it safely. you need to get a idea if legumes , such as peas and lentils are a problem, and of course they are related to peanuts. the most common signs of food allergy in breastfed infants are often shown before the first 3 months , eczema, poor weight gain, and poor sleep pattern. my son showed all these signs, and was diagnosed as being egg/tree nut/peanut dustmite , tree pollen at 18 months old. after having reactions at 12 and 13 months to peanut and egg.

Re: Allergies in Babies

Dear Linguist,

Please ask your GP for a referral to specialist paediatric allergy centre. We do skin prick test in young babies and the results are meaningful. It sounds as though your daughter may be having allergic reactions to legumes (this is quite common) as well as the milk allergy. We would want to screen to any of the common allergens that she has not yet eaten so that you know how to proceed with weaning.

Please show your GP the following from the NICE guidelines:
1.1.17 Based on the allergy-focused clinical history, consider referral to secondary or specialist care in any of the following circumstances.
•The child or young person has:
◦had one or more acute systemic reactions
◦had one or more severe delayed reactions

•There is:
◦persisting parental suspicion of food allergy (especially in children or young people with difficult or perplexing symptoms) despite a lack of supporting history
◦clinical suspicion of multiple food allergies.

I hope you get some answers soon.

Re: Allergies in Babies

I don't know if this will help but I fed my baby Gerber.
Her first liquid/solid food.
Go the pediatrician for check up if possible multiple pediatrician just to be sure.
Babies that old are so delicate.
