Varicose veins of Vulva and Vagina

1 in 5 women (20%) who have had children and have leg varicose veins have varicose veins of their vulva and vagina feeding into the leg varicose veins.
These come from varicose veins in the pelvis and need to be treated before the leg varicose veins to get good long term results.
Varicose veins of the vulva or vagina can be a disturbing thing to have - however they can be treated by specialist embolisation procedure and injections without the need for surgery.

Re: Varicose veins of Vulva and Vagina

Are there any signs to look out for that the varicose veins in your legs are related to potential pelvic veins? Any warning signs that we can be aware of to 'limit the problem' before it takes hold? Is it possible that you could have pelvic varicose veins without realising, or would they be painful / visible and therefore you would be aware??

Re: Varicose veins of Vulva and Vagina

Hi Alice,
In answer to the first question - yes you can often tell if your varicose veins are related to pelvic veins - you will see veins high up on the inside of the leg near the vulva or the veins runs across the back of the thigh - see the photos on:
http://www.vulval-varicose-veins.co.uk and
http://www.collegeofphlebology.com/vulv ... what-is-it

As for symptoms, if you have large varicose veins in your pelvis, you can get the symptoms of pelvic congestion syndrome - heaviness in the pelvis, irritable bladder or bowel, discomfort after sexual intercourse etc.

Re: Varicose veins of Vulva and Vagina

Hi Mr Whiteley,

I have recently started to notice some fairly prominent veins on my leg and have also been suffering from some cramping pains around my pelvis. I've been doing some research online and have read that this could be varicose veins of the vulva? I was just wondering if you thought this could be the case, and what your advice would be?

Many thanks.

Re: Varicose veins of Vulva and Vagina

Hi Emily,
Basically you need to have a duplex ultrasound of your leg veins and your pelvic veins.
These need to be carried out in a specialist unit - especially the pelvic veins as they are not often scanned for reflux in gynae clinics or vein clinics.
Once we know the results of these 2 tests then we will know the answer.
Best wishes.
Mark

How long after childbirth would you recommend waiting before booking a scan if you have the symptons you have highlighted?

Re: Varicose veins of Vulva and Vagina

Hi Mr Whiteley,

I'm currently pregnant with my first child and very worried about getting Varicose veins of the vagina as my mother suffered with them after having me.

Can you advise whether there is a genetic link meaning im more likely to get them. Can you also advise what symptoms I should look out for so I can be aware of them early.

Thank you

Re: Varicose veins of Vulva and Vagina

Hi Mr Whiteley,

I suffered with bad varicose veins around the top of my thighs and my inner leg just after giving birth to my first child two years ago but they have gone since then.

I am now pregnant with my second and worried they might return. Is this likely? If they do what can be done to get rid of them? My GP wasn't much help!

Thank you.
