IVF GUIDELINES

Hi i am currently seeing a specialist about being diagnosed with pcos and i am not ovulating on my own and have had to use clomid we have since found out that my partner has a low sperm count but has 2 kids with previous partner that he can no longer see as we have been through court proceedings but they have been adopted now. My consultant says that i will not be able to have ivf but is this true as i heard that i could still have it as i have had friends tell me that they know people that have had ivf despite having children from previous relationships and this is really getting me and my partner down we are 26 and 27 and making us feel really depressed can any one help me on this?

Re: IVF GUIDELINES

It depends on the local guidelines in each area, and you can appeal these. The guidelines are made by the GP's in your area - a group called the 'PCT' but the NHS reorganisation may mean that this group may change its name soon to something like 'clinical commissioning group'. Your GP can help direct you.

However, the IVF clinic will have to ensure that they are meeting the welfare needs of any future children and you may be asked to undergo a case conference with regard to the issue with your partner's children.

Re: IVF GUIDELINES

Hi Charlotte,

Thanks for getting back in touch.

It would be well worth seeing your GP to see if you can get referred or appeal the decision to deny you IVF on the NHS. The are special meetings held to discuss these sorts of appeals and if you don't ask you don't get! It is likely that you would have to appeal through your GP.

If your partner has a low sperm count it may be worth looking at options to improve this and his GP could help him with this also.

Good luck!
