Menopause, Fibroids & HRT
I've recently been diagnosed with menopause and was advised to take HRT. I am concerned about the risks as I've had uterine fibroids since 1997. After removing them with a myomectemy in 1997, fibroids returned in 2002. I have not had another surgery yet and have tried to reduce the fibroid growth through diet (avoiding estrogen-rich foods) and exercise. Is there a chance that the fibroids will grow as I take HRT? Is there a form of HRT I can take that will reduce the impact on the fibroids?
I also have a family hostory of strokes and high cholesterol. My mother had high cholesterol, several strokes and arteriosclerosis. I have high cholesterol of 239. I have been advised that taking HRT, particularly estrogen, would help with controlling my cholesterol problem. I have also been experiencing hip joint pain and wrist pain. Given my concerns about the fibroids, my cholesterol level and future bone health, what level and type of HRT should I take?

Re: Menopause, Fibroids & HRT
There certainly appear to be good reasons to take HRT and you may well find that the joint aches are helped. The history of fibroids should not cause too much concern--fibroids are common, often small and not necessarily stimulated by HRT. Suggest start with a low dose, which would usually be recommended anyway, and the fibroids can be monitored by symptoms, examination and sometimes ultrasound scan may be helpful.
