Re: Could my daughter have dyslexia?

Hi there
Thanks for your post.

I can understand how concerned you are, having been called to the school to discuss your child's behaviour and possible diagnosis of dyslexia. :?

You ask if her apparent behaviour problems could be related to having a diagnosis of dyslexia.

Although challenging behaviour is not necessarily linked to the symptoms of dyslexia, it is understandable that the frustration that may go along with this diagnosis may impact on self esteem and being able to keep up with peers, and may contribute to behaviour difficulties.

I would suggest that you go along to speak to your child's teacher with an open mind and listen to what she has to say. She will be able to tell you how your child is performing in key areas which could indicate a problem with dyslexia, such as difficulty in processing information i.e. reading, writing and numbers.

She may suggest a meeting with the school's Special Needs Coordinator (SENCO).
However, if you are not satisfied with the advice or support you get through this route don't hesitate to contact your Local Dyslexia Association or speak to your GP who will refer you to specialist help.

Another good source of support and information is through http://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/

In the meantime I would suggest that you observe how your child copes with her school homework, reading, writing an numeracy at home, without alerting her to any concerns you may have.

It may also be helpful to think of any other issues that could contribute to your child feeling unsettled at school such as bullying or recent changes at home such as a new baby or relationship problem.

I hope you get some satisfactory answers soon and your child gets the support she needs.

Best wishes

Re: Could my daughter have dyslexia?

Hi,

I agree with the advice above.

If the teacher suspects Dyslexia, It may be important for the school to do a Dyslexia screen (if not already done). This is best arranged by the teacher through the school SENCO. It may be worth confirming this when you meet with the teacher. If your daughter is in year 3, it may be worth looking at her year 2 SATS results (if your school does them) to see if any areas of concern were identified?

Dyslexia is not automatically linked to poor behaviour and it is always advisable to rule out at any other causes of poor behaviour such as bullying or developmental conditions (such as ADHD).

Finally, talk to your daughter and ask if there is something that's bothering her. She may be able to give you some pointers to what's going on for her.

All the best, I hope you are able to sort things out soon.
